Tanzania is a safe country

How is it possible to maintain peace in a nation where 120 different tribes and 3 religions coexist? Here is the story of an African miracle

The political masterpiece of Julius Nyerere

The birth of a democratic African state

Few Westerners know a name so loved by the Tanzanians, Julius Nyerere, the professor: a true father for Tanzania, promoter of an authentic political masterpiece. Nyerere participated in the independence of the country from Great Britain, obtained in 1961, and was among those who assumed the task of organizing the newly born nation. It was not easy to invent an African state and Nyerere started from history: the culture prior to colonization was founded on the small group, the tribe, source of subsistence, protection and identity.

Ujamaa, family solidarity extends to the nation

The tribe was based on the ujamaa, the family solidarity, and it is the ujamaa that Nyerere considered wealth and base of the new state. Making ujamaa became the watchword throughout the state and kwemakaka, "Tutto bene fratello", the most common greeting. The sense of brotherhood so strong in the small group spread to the entire nation consolidating a strong identity and making this state to this day one of the most peaceful of the African continent

The challenges won

The objectives that Nyerere set were real challenges for Tanzania:

• The search for greater social justice

• the fight against inequality

• the spread of education

• the distribution of lands

• the conservation and creation of natural parks (up to protecting a quarter of the national territory)

Challenges that were won despite the great difficulties. The secret of the Government of Nyerere was the real collaboration with the chiefs of the 120 different members who made up the mosaic of Tanzania: a continuous dialogue with the population that allowed him to make understand and accept even difficult choices.

A culture based on trust

Even today, traveling in the company of a Tanzanian, this fabric is perceived: wherever you are there will be someone to help him: food and a place to sleep even for those who do not have money. Exchanges are based on trust and not on mistrust: you can leave thousands of dollars to a stranger to buy a car from him, at the set time he will return with the car and it will not be necessary to turn it over. There are situations, in big cities or where tourism is very intense, in which theft and robbery happen, but it is not widespread, and locals often laugh at the morbidity with which we remain attached to our portfolios.

Legacy still present

Since 1985, when the Professor resigned due to international pressure, many things have changed but the twenty years of his government remain a constant reference for the population. The new president, elected in October 2015, said first: "I want to go back to Nyerere", and efforts are underway.

True Africa

What stages will give you real contact with the local population, far from the most tourist routes?

One of the safest African states

This is why the conflict in Tanzania is practically absent. Zanzibar's separatist pressures are limited to political dialogue. 120 different tribes and three religions live together respecting differences. But it is no accident. A lot of work has been done to achieve this lasting peace and every day the Tanzanians carry out their challenge with great commitment, in the heart of a continent like Africa.
