Food for everyone and laws that help
Tanzania has one of the lowest levels of per capita income, yet it manages to feed all of its children.
The laws of the nation have provided for the distribution of fertile lands, equally divided among all the families of a certain area. Breeders are protected from natural calamities because if a lion eats a cow the state repays the cow; if a year does not rain and the livestock die the state reaps the cattle. People live on simple things and a subsistence economy prevails: it is often sufficient that only one member of the large family works to feed everyone.
A question of justice
Why do they ask us for money then? I also asked this question. The common idea is that whites come to give away what they own or to return what their nations have stolen in the past. It is perceived as a matter of justice. But few ask, most offer handicrafts or services.
The right photo
Also in many areas the photographs are experienced as a "theft": we shoot without asking for photos that will give us some kind of income, without sharing anything or almost with the legitimate owner of that image. The right to image is not our only concern. They all know very well that their faces will easily end up on the internet. Try to notice how many faces who are annoyed or who are trying to hide can be found in travel photos and even in many postcards.
How much is appreciated instead if you ask permission and if you also contract a fee! What seems right, both to us and to the one who gives us the picture.
